Explore Sapporo's Historic Landmarks and Shopping Streets
Meet your tour guide and begin with a visit to the Red Brick Building, the Former Hokkaidō Government Office. Learn about the history of Sapporo and the frontier spirit of the farmer soldiers as you see the red stars on the wall of the roof cresting. Your guide will also show you an old picture and the red star used as a label for Sapporo Beer. Visit the Clock Tower, where your guide will explain its history. Some tourists are surprised to find this building smaller than they expected, and you will get to know why. Follow your guide to Odori Park, where the TV Tower stands. Head to the Nijiyo Fish Market. Your guide will discuss its history and show you many kinds of fresh seafood. As you walk around the market, you will also see food models of "Kaisen Don," or rice bowls topped with sliced raw fish. Continue to Tanuki Koji, also known as Raccoon Dog Shopping Street. This shopping street is the oldest shopping district in Hokkaido and is home to 200 shops, including restaurants. See the Raccoon Shrine, and your guide will explain the origin of the place. You will also see a Japanese kitchen knife shop, ramen noodle restaurants, amusement arcades, a pachinko parlor, and more.
