Saint Catherine Monastery and the Coloured Canyon by Jeep
Early in the morning, a tour representative will pick you up from your hotel to discover the top highlights of the Sinai Desert in a modern jeep. Drive to Saint Catherine Monastery in the heart of the Sinai Peninsula, at an altitude of 1,570 metres, where, according to tradition, Moses saw the burning bush that did not burn up. It stands in the foothills of Gable Moses, or Mount Sinai, on whose summit Moses received the tablets of the law inscribed with the Ten Commandments. The monastery dates back to the age of Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, when the enclosure wall surrounding it was also built. It was later named Saint Catherine at the beginning of the 11th century in honour of Saint Catherine, one of the earliest Christian martyrs of Alexandria. Then return to the St Catherine road and travel about 65 kilometres north of St Catherine. The track begins at one of the geological wonders of Sinai, the coloured canyon. Its very narrow walls, rising 40 metres high and in some places just over a metre wide, are formed of sandstone with an incredible range of hues from dark brown to red and straw yellow, created by the presence of magnesium and iron oxides. Later, return to Dahab for lunch, with time to walk along Dahab Street, Mashyia. Then drive back to your hotel.
