Rosetta Discovery Tour from Alexandria
You will be picked up from your hotel or cruise ship (at the exit point of the cruise) at around 08:00 am by your expert-speaking tour guide. You will be transferred in a modern air-conditioned vehicle, including bottled water, and driven for about 1 hour from Alexandria to the city of Rosetta, now known as Rashid. On arrival, you will visit the Rashid Museum, one of the city's original and uniquely styled red-and-black brick houses set along its small, winding streets. Enjoy a complete guided tour of the museum and discover a replica of the Rosetta Stone inscribed in three languages: Ancient Pharaonic, Demotic, and Ancient Greek. The original is currently on display in the British Museum. From here, take a walking tour through the small local streets and souq to discover local life and markets, where fresh bread, fruit, vegetables, fish, and meat are sold, while heading toward the preserved Ottoman homes. Discover a second house on the city's streets and admire other old house frontages. The House of Amasyali is very ornate and is considered one of the finer examples. A visit to the Mill of Abu Shaheen reveals a house of trade that once served both the household and the local community. After touring the houses, walk a short distance with your guide to visit the local Hanging Mosque, a unique construction and one of only a few mosques in Egypt built on an upper level, with storage units underneath for shops and supplies. Finally, drive to the citadel on the city's outskirts. Built around 1479, it lies next to the Nile River with views of the Mediterranean Sea. Known as Qaitbey, it was constructed as a defence mechanism against attacks by invaders from the Mediterranean. Take some time to climb to the top of the citadel along the fortified walls and enjoy the lovely views of where the Nile meets the Mediterranean. You will then leave the citadel and head back toward Alexandria, stopping for lunch and time to relax before returning to your cruise ship or hotel in Alexandria.
