Itinerary

  1. 1
    Day 01

Tsagaan Suvarga and the White Stupa Cliffs

Explanation: Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa) is a giant 60-meter-high, 400-meter-wide cliff face formed by millions of years of wind and water erosion on an ancient ocean bed. Its sedimentary clay layers create striking horizontal bands of red, orange, and white, resembling ancient stupas from a distance. Activities: Overland drive south across the Dundgovi steppe (~430 km). Activities: Trek along the top cliff ridge for panoramic views. Activities: Hike down into the gorge floor to explore the eroded canyons. Activities: Capture sunset photography over the colored rock formations. Overnight Stay: Overnight stay with a local Mongolian nomadic family in a traditional ger near Tsagaan Suvarga.

  2. 2
    Day 02

Yolyn Am and Gurvan Saikhan Mountains

Explanation: Yolyn Am (Vulture Valley) is a deep, narrow gorge tucked within the Gurvan Saikhan (Three Beauties) Mountains of the South Gobi. Because its high granite walls block sunlight, the canyon harbors a thick ice field that historically persists late into summer. Activities: Drive southwest toward the mountain ranges (~200 km). Activities: Hike through the narrow canyon gorge. Activities: Spot wildlife like Lammergeier vultures and ibex along the cliffs. Activities: Explore the local natural history museum at the park entrance. Overnight Stay: Overnight stay with a nomadic family hosted in a traditional ger near the foothills of the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains.

  3. 3
    Day 03

Khongoryn Els and the Singing Dunes

Explanation: Khongoryn Els (Singing Dunes) is one of Mongolia's largest and most dramatic sand dune systems, stretching over 100 km long and reaching heights up to 300 meters. As wind moves the surface sand grains, the dunes produce a deep, resonant humming sound known as Duut Mankhan. Activities: Travel west across dry desert basins (~180 km). Activities: Visit a camel-herding household. Activities: Ride double-humped Bactrian camels along the desert floor. Activities: Climb the Singing Dune for a spectacular sunset view. Overnight Stay: Overnight stay in a traditional ger with a local camel-herding nomadic family near the dune oasis.

  4. 4
    Day 04

    Bayanzag and the Flaming Cliffs

Explanation: Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs) is a world-renowned paleontological site made of fiery red sandstone structures. In the 1920s, American explorer Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the world's first fossilized dinosaur eggs here, revolutionizing prehistoric research. Activities: Overland drive northeast through the open Gobi terrain (~150 km). Activities: Walk through the ancient Saxaul tree forest. Activities: Explore the red sandstone cliffs and fossil beds. Activities: Witness the rocks glow fiery red in the evening light. Overnight Stay: Overnight stay with a local nomadic family in a traditional ger near Bayanzag.

  5. 5
    Day 05

    Kharkhorin and Erdene Zuu Monastery

Explanation: Kharkhorin is the historic site of Karakorum, the 13th-century capital of the Mongol Empire founded by Genghis Khan and built up by Ögedei Khan. It is home to Erdene Zuu Monastery, built in 1585, which stands as Mongolia's oldest surviving Buddhist monastic complex surrounded by 108 stupas. Activities: Drive north out of the Gobi desert toward the Orkhon Valley (~340 km). Activities: Tour the Erdene Zuu Monastery complex. Activities: View preserved stone turtle markers. Activities: Explore the artifacts inside the Kharkhorin Museum. Overnight Stay: Overnight stay with a local nomadic family / guesthouse along the banks of the Orkhon River.

  6. 6
    Day 06

Return to Ulaanbaatar via Elsen Tasarkhai

Explanation: The final leg of the journey heads east across the central steppe highway, transitioning from the historic Orkhon Valley back into the capital city, passing the sand strips of Elsen Tasarkhai along the way. Activities: Overland drive east toward Ulaanbaatar (~360 km). Activities: Take a scenic stop and lunch break near Elsen Tasarkhai (Mini Gobi). Activities: Final evening arrival and drop-off in Ulaanbaatar. Overnight Stay: Drop-off at hotel or preferred city accommodation in Ulaanbaatar (end of tour services).
