Walking Through the Historic Heart of Évora
Meet your tour guide at the Giraldo Square fountain, the heart of Évora and a great place to soak up the atmosphere of the city. See the highlights of the square while your guide gives you a brief introduction to this beautiful city. Walk to the Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos), located in the Church of St. Francis. The chapel is adorned with the bones of thousands of individuals, creating an eerie but fascinating experience. Head southeast from the Chapel of Bones to visit the Roman Temple of Évora (Templo Romano). See the Inquisition Palace, built in the 16th century, where many trials against the Jewish community took place, forcing many families to flee to the US, Brazil, and Israel. Continue southeast to reach Évora Cathedral (Sé de Évora). Constructed in the 13th century to mark the end of the Islamic period, it is popular today for its statue of the Virgin Mary. Move on to the Évora Aqueduct and marvel at the impressive structure that once brought water to the city. You can walk along parts of it and enjoy panoramic views of Évora. End your tour back at Giraldo Square, where you can find a variety of restaurants and cafes to enjoy a meal or a refreshing drink.
