Pico Wine Tour through Criação Velha

Start the tour in Lajes do Pico. Head along the South Coast in the direction of Madalena. Stop in São Mateus to get an idea of the extension of the vineyards. Continue along the coastline and discover built centres of adegas that are nowadays abandoned. The little lava stone houses are now only used as weekend houses or for the production of local table wine. See the protected vineyard landscape and find tidal wells, distilleries, wine presses, ancient warehouses, "Rola-pipas" (stone ramps), "relheiras", and manor houses. Reach the vineyards of Criação Velha, the heart of the UNESCO Heritage site. Stroll through the area and get a clear idea of why Pico's wine is so different and unique in the world.
