Bari Vecchia, St. Nicholas and the Norman-Swabian Castle

Explore the city of Bari, famous worldwide for preserving the relics of St. Nicholas of Myra, venerated as a saint by the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. St. Nicholas became famous even outside the Christian world because his figure gave rise to the myth of Santa Claus (or Klaus), a symbol associated with the Coca-Cola Company. The tour starts from the medieval castle in Piazza Federico II di Svevia, the Norman-Swabian Castle fortress built in the twelfth century by Roger the Norman. After its destruction by William I of Sicily, it was rebuilt by Frederick II Hohenstaufen. The walk continues to the eleventh-century Cathedral of St. Sabino and then to the Basilica of St. Nicholas, built in the twelfth century to preserve the relics of St. Nicholas of Myra. It is considered one of the most beautiful examples of Romanesque architecture. The tour ends with a visit to Piazza Mercantile and the Column of Justice. Free time to buy typical local products.
